Up Front Scenario SC/1: Rodger Young's Assault By Steve Cook New Georgia, Solomon Islands, 31 July 1943 American Attackers:1-7, 9 (Myers is PVT Young), DC Japanese Defenders: 16, 19, 21 Attacker Sets Up and Plays First. Number of Decks: 1 No cards are removed from the Action Deck. Special Rules: A.1 Jungle Rules (47) are in effect. A.2 The Sniper, Minefield, and Marsh cards are treated as Cower cards. A.3 The defender receives the Pillbox to place on Group B. All the defending player's Personality Cards start in the B group. A.4 The attacker sets up all of his groups in Woods by using the first Woods cards revealed by a random search through the deck sufficient to house all of his groups. PVT Young must be place alone in Group B. All of the attacking Personalities begin the game Pinned. A.5 The defending force is Elite. A.6 Young's Special Rules: 1. The first time Young is KIAed or Routed, he is not killed but merely Wounded. The wounded chit is placed on him and he remains in play with pinned status. 2. Young gets one "free" Hero card. This ability can be used any time by playing any card face down directly into the discard pile. 3. Young can infiltrate while wounded. Victory Conditions: - The attacker wins immediately if the pillbox is vacated or when PVT Young successfully detonates the Demo Charge in the pillbox. The attack resolution does not need to be made. The defender wins immediately if he kills one or more attackers, or at the end of the time limit by avoiding the attacker's victory conditions. Background: Young, Rodger W., Private, 148th Infantry, 37th Infantry Division (the Ohio Buckeyes); born Tiffin Ohio, 28 April 1918; died 31 July 1943, On the island New Georgia, Solomons, South Pacific, while single-handedly attacking and destroying an enemy machine-gun pillbox. His platoon had been pinned down by intense fire from this pillbox; Private Young was wounded in the first burst. He crawled toward the Pillbox, was wounded a second time but continued to advance, firing his rifle as he did so. He closed on the pillbox, attacked and destroyed it with hand grenades, but in so doing he was wounded a third time and killed. His bold and gallant action in the face of overwhelming odds enabled his teammates to escape without loss; he was awarded posthumously the Medal of Honor.
